California public schools are changing both how they teach math, and also what they expect students to learn. In December 1997, state leaders adopted new math standards that include more than basic arithmetic skills. The framework lists five areas of math called |strands,| that define what students from kindergarten through seventh grade need to learn, including: (1) Number sense, which is basic arithmetic and includes fractions, decimals, and mastery of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing without the aid of a calculator; (2) Algebra and functions; (3) Measurement and geometry; (4) Statistics, data analysis, and probability; and (5) Mathematical reasoning or the thinking skills that go beyond mathematics, such as learning how to judge arguments based on logic. Implementation of the new standards and information for parents to determine if their children are learning up to standard are discussed. A list of resources for additional information is included.
